My first encounter with Anurag was back when he was leading SME lending at HSBC. This was during the early days of GPS Renewables when we were still finding our wings. Like any budding startup, we were in search of someone to rally behind us – a daunting task in the debt space, especially for first-generation entrepreneurs like us with no established banking history or track record.

In the world of finance, finding a champion willing to take the risk of supporting a startup is not always easy. However, we were fortunate to discover that champion in Anurag. To us, he wasn’t just a high-flying banker; he was a fellow “startup” comrade. His approach was different; he understood the challenges we faced and stood by us.

I interacted with Anurag when Campus Sutra started its relationship with HSBC. There were 3 things that stood out for me during our time of working together

– His understanding of various sectors. I was amazed at how closely he was following the new age sectors. He seemed to be a person who had made a special effort to keep himself abreast with the startup ecosystem. His insights and understanding of various sectors stood out for me.
– He is a people person who invests in relationship. We had a great time working together where we could share with him our business progress and challenges in a very open manner
– He was very honest about sharing his ideas and his assessment of the situation.

Anurag is passionate about his clients and is always thinking of solutions to be provided to his clients. I know Anurag now for around three years. Anurag is a key member of the client coverage team for HSBC India in the corporate banking group. I got a chance to work with him very closely on some of the potential transactions in capital market and advisory space. Though we didn’t close any capital market deals in his portfolio, I noticed that his understanding of client’s needs was spot on.
